Some weeks back I bought a ticket for Geese at the Barras. All the music mags had their 2025 album as THE album of the year – not necessarily all placed at number one, but many had it placed within the top five. I listened to the album, and quite enjoyed it and decided to see if they were touring the country. Saw the Barras dates for August and saw they were already sold out. Damn. Nae bother.
Then a number of days later, there was another gig announced for March. I was right on it. I’d seen the announcement come in from Gigs In Scotland there and then and jumped on a ticket knowing that if for whatever reason I changed my mind, I would easily sell the ticket on.
I haven’t listened to the album since and then over the past while I’d be reconsidering going to the gig. I had bought the ticket mostly with this notion I could attend one of ‘the hottest gigs in town’ kind of thing. A ‘I was there’ moment – potentially. But then I was thinking I’m really not that interested and someone else would be way more keen to go than me. And yet…I had the ticket. It would be a fun gig, I think. So…I held off.
Then a few weeks back I was listening to Ronnie McGhie’s show on Wednesday night ‘Wednesday Night Live’ on Irvine Beat FM and he played a track from a local Glaswegian band called Lemon Drink. The song title both piqued the interest while also giving a bit of cringe as the song is called ‘Patsy Kensit.’ I was thinking oh no, don’t be some silly parody kind of thing, some throw away tat – but it SSOOO wasn’t. Despite the title, Patsy is NOT actually the subject of the song and it does have a sting to its tail. It’s very good! It was stuck in my head for days after.

I just fell for it and so I looked to see if Lemon Drink had any gigs coming up. I looked at their social media and they had been posting about a gig at McChuills on 20 March. The Geese gig at the Barras is for the following night. So that was it for me. Did I want to see some “hot band” from New York – the darlings of the moment (they even a Brit award the other night, ffs), OR, did I want to go and see some promising local talent at a great local venue (not that the Barras is shabby by the way! Let’s make that clear!) for a third of the cost and show some REAL support to someone?!
It was a no-brainer.
I arranged the resale through Ticketmaster and FUCK ME, that Geese ticket was snapped up IN FOUR MINUTES. Other tickets I have not been able to give away. This one WHOOOOOOOOSH – it was gone! Am I regretting it? Nope. Because I am really looking forward to seeing Lemon Drink at McChuills in a couple of weeks. I’ll enjoy myself and find it easy to get to the city and back again and not freak out about getting my way back home from the Barras which is an arse quite frankly, unless you book a taxi back or are in the company of friends. I’ll have a great time instead of a panicked time.
In the meantime….enjoy Patsy Kensit.
