Jim’s post yesterday. It had me thinking – yes, a photo of Charlie on violin is pretty rare. Certainly not many exist from the period but during 5×5 Live and the later “Hits+” tour, he played the violin again.
So for me, the even RARER photo of Charlie with a musical instrument is him on saxophone. (He’s even in a white shirt too, Jim!)
Virginia only has two of these photos. And she had only two of them as original vintage prints (ones she developed from the negative in the dark room at the time). I have this one. I sent Jim the other. No idea if he got it. I hope he did.
Anyway, just thought I’d share a “rare as hen’s teeth” photo of Charlie.
Me just looking backwards “at thirty frames a second” as I always do.
I shared this photo (just a quick snap of it when it arrived by post on my camera, rather than the proper scanned image that I’m sharing here) on FB when it arrived just to share the sheer beauty of this man and show some of the collecting hoard I had got myself.
A friend said “he’s got too much eyeliner on”. Lol. I was like “WHAAAAA? This is NOTHING compared to some make up jobs he’s had.”
I personally thought it was subtle and beautiful.
Jesus though, Kerr! You ain’t half a looker! Don’t be giving me none of that “acne-faced geek” business. Codswallop! You’ve always been gorgeous. You always will be.
And I know it isn’t Kerrsday, but what the hay. Who cares?
I got some magazines and did some scans of the articles and pics and will post some of them shortly. In the meantime…
Jim Kerr – you’re a spunk! (It’s old Aussie slang for someone who’s ‘well braw’ – despite how it sounds. Lol)
Well played Ronnie Gurr for revealing this this evening. I’ve only ever seen a few of Richard Coward’s SM images. Obviously his photography was used for the Empires And Dance artwork and there’s an image of Jim he took in the Scottish Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, but these are the only things I have ever seen.
So, I checked out of the hotel I had spent the past three nights in this morning.
I then went to the local shopping mall – Westfield, Liverpool… just to kill some time before heading up to Gosford and spending a few days with my friend, Gillian.
I wandered about Westfield for a while, that is where I spotted the travel agency photographed below.
When I left the mall and was making my way to the train station, to my utter amazement, I saw an advertising billboard for SM. I really never expected to see such a thing in my home town. Lol. It blew my tiny (and Simple) mind.
So, here’s the thing. I was working on social media and my work took me to Instagram. The name Tom Sheehan pops up. A photographer. I thought “His name seems familiar to me in terms of having worked with Simple Minds. I’ll go to the blog and search for him and see what crops up.”
Well, blow me down! What cropped was Melody Maker from November 27th(!), 1982 – and photos of Jim in various poses with a Canadian flag.
HUNTER AND THE HUNTED! My HATH art piece! It was Tom’s photo on the cover I had used for it.
I contacted him on Instagram. He probably thinks me a prized idiot. And is probably highly pissed off I used his photo. 😞☹️
I went on to explain the significance of it for me. What the piece I generated meant. Jim’s reaction to it…everything. And how much I would love to get an original print of the photo. I have no idea if it’s possible. He probably won’t even take me seriously. He may never respond to me.
I can’t afford to buy a print from him yet. And even if it is the only one I ever buy from him…I have to get it! I really hope he can sell it as a print. I have since been to his website and he does sell prints, but whether I can get one of Jim from the MM cover remains to be seen.
I’ll approach him again when I have the money to buy.
Had a go at tidying up the image of Jim in the SSIS fold-out poster with the 7” vinyl. Don’t know if any of you guys have a crease proof copy, but I don’t…and I have three of them! Lol.
30+ years of being folded up will do that.
The crease stubbornly would fall all down the left side of his face across his eye (and when I say the left side…I mean from his perspective). I tried tidying it up years ago, but thought I’d have a fresh go…and just added a few other “improvements”. (Not so much with him…it’s impossible to improve upon perfection…)
The fresh attempt was spurred on by someone viewing my original attempt of “improvement” a couple of days ago.
