Today marks the 40th anniversary of the reopening of the Barrowland Ballroom as a world renown music venue, and all thanks to Simple Minds choosing to film their Waterfront video there.
The day is one that has gone down in local fan history as not only did the band film the video but also rewarded patient fans with a concert later in the day as reward for their time during the recording of the video shoot.
So, for today’s MMM, there really was no other choice but to have the Waterfront music video feature in celebration. Happy Anniversary Barras! And happy anniversary Waterfront video.
Good morning Larelle!
Yeah, I forgot about the date for that. If I mind this correctly I listened in late to Billy Sloan’s show on Radio Clyde and he advertised his show as having tracks from the forthcoming album and an interview with Jim live on the phone from Canada. He was joined by 2 of the following 3 in the studio – Charlie, Mick & Derek. Can’t remember which 2 but they were just swanning about town and thought they would pop in for a chat!
Anyway I posted in my application for the video shoot right after the show (about 2:00am) but I never ever heard any more about this!
I taped all this off the radio but it disappeared not long after!
Also remember it’s the date of the Newcastle City Hall, 1982 gig. Not broadcast till about September 1983 but a pretty important recorded gig for us fans of this era of the band.
Back to Waterfront – yes, they did an amazing video for this iconic track. Powerful stuff!
All the best,
A&T
Hi A&T,
A shame that you didn’t get to experience the Waterfront shoot. By all accounts it sounds like it was an amazing day. As for the Newcastle City Hall NGD gig – I listened to the full audio bootleg last week and it is just so awesome. The pace of that version of Hunter And The Hunted is incredible! But I’ve had that other version stuck in my head since then – the one where Jim says ‘when I’m with you life moves so fucking fast – wooh!’ – there’s just an extra energy to it and the swearing means he’s extra emotive. Can’t remember which version that one is off the top of my head? Toronto? Melbourne? Cannae remember. Anyway, exciting times. I long for a TARDIS but we can’t live in the past. Time marches on. I hope you’re well? Take care 🙂
