This weekend sees the anniversary of the release of Bilndfolded as video on YouTube (uploaded to YT 4 September 2014). Seemingly it is not recognised as being a single release. Wikipedia deems Honest Town as the lead single release for the Big Music album – but the first new music I heard from SM when becoming a fan was Blindfolded.
When I look at Dream Giver Redux, Simon mentions that Blindfolded was played on Steve Lamacq’s Roundtable on BBC Radio 6 Music. I’m not sure if I listened in to the program. I get the feeling I must have. The video was posted on YT the same day, so I either listened to Lamacq’s show, or saw the clip. Either way, Blindfolded was definitely the first new music of theirs that I heard as a new fledged “diehard”.
And I fucking loved it! And I still do. And what an opener to the album! I thought that if Blindfolded was anything to go by, the whole album would be AMAZING!
I guess I chose to highlight this due to Jim’s post today (assuming it was Jim – there was no sign-off today…so who knows?) which seemed to be about fans finding SM again.
I’ve never really been too sure how to qualify my own fandom. Did I rekindle mine? That would make it sound like I was REALLY into them and then not. But it never felt like that. They always felt like one of my “other bands I like” kind of thing….you know? One of the ones you listen to when you’re looking for a change, or bored of your “regulars”. Lol. Now they ARE the regular and when I listen to something new or different it’s from feeling in a Minds rut. Not that I feel “in a rut”, as such. I think after 8 years of fandom, I’ve finally just….come to a nice equilibrium. It’s been a looooooong time coming. I genuinely thought it never would do.
I fell asleep listening to them every night….EVERY NIGHT…for a solid 7 years. I might listen to them now maybe two nights a week. That seems more – stable. Normal. Lol
As for Blindfolded itself? Holy heck! Charlie’s guitar work is just killer! I love the video too – it’s like Chemical Brothers Star Guitar meets Godfrey Reggio’s film Koyaanisqatsi. You know what I’ll say next. Lol. The lyrics – I love the lyrics! That bloody Kerr…he’s not bad at this “writing lyrics” lark, eh?
As a side note, my very first trip to Scotland was to Edinburgh to see a screening of Koyaanisqatsi with an interview and Q and A with Philip Glass afterwards. Never dreamed back then that I’d be living here.
Funny how life goes…
Happy MMM.
Yep, love Blindfolded. Originally conceived with the legendary Steve Hillage, before metamorphosising into the more electronic track we came to know on Big Music. Also love the video too of course, how could I not?! Trains! ?
