CITIZEN (DANCE OF YOUTH)
Another quick examination of an under-appreciated track from the Simple Minds canon. This time the spotlight focuses on ‘Citizen (Dance of Youth)’. When fans think about the point in which Simple Minds became political they usually turn to Street Fighting Years, or at the very earliest Once Upon a Time. Where as I would offer up this track as just one example of how far back Simple Minds’ political edge went. Jim Kerr might well deny or refute such political tendencies so early on. He may even claim to be purely accidental, and that could very well be the case. But just take time to dissect the lyrics (I have helped you here by providing a visual display) and you will hear exactly what I’m on about.
