Today marks the 28th anniversary of the release of Hypnotised, the second single from the Good News From The Next World album. I always felt it was a stronger single than She’s A River. Thus continuing the tradition that, although not universally true (but a fairly constant), the second Simple Minds single from a new album is the stronger one.
It also has a rather exotic and scintillating video, with a pained and yet rather sensual Jim writhing around on a sofa – in full neck veins popping and thigh rubbing splendour (grabs fan and water spritz).
“If you’ve got a heart that burns inside,
Let me get inside, let me tangle with the flames.
If you’ve got a light that burns inside.
The heat will rise and melt down once again.”
Those words never quite feel the same once you witness the video. I’m always visualising the writhing around on the sofa after that.
All in all, it’s an incredibly sensual song. Not much else to say on this one really. I just didn’t want another MMM to pass without acknowledging an anniversary.
So, Happy Anniversary, Hypnotised.
I’m off to watch some Kerr couch contortions…
Hi Larelle thanks for posting this one. I’ve managed not to hear this (yep shocking I know) or seen the video. Both work together really well, someone knew what they were doing. I am fascinated by Charlie and the young girl doing ..well whatever they are doing. Parent and child? The undead?
Love Charlie’s whistle and flute!
Best wishes,
Amanda
Thanks, Amanda. I love your ponderings re: Charlie and the young girl in the video. Lol. I can?t say I know for sure. The whole video is quite abstract which I like.
No shame in not knowing of the song or video until now. I mean hell, my own exploration of the SM back catalogue is still relatively recent (compared to a lot of the fans I know of now who have been with them since year dot, or at least from the mid-eighties onwards).
Also it?s great to know that this old blog is still getting visitors. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.???
