After last week’s stunning Kerrsday photos taken by Horst Waschinski in Cologne in March 1982 – here is another set of photos from 1982.
These are from 3 September, 1982 in Helsinki. It’s officially the first gig of the LONG New Gold Dream tour that spans from autumn 1982 through to the summer of 1983. It’s 10 days before the album’s release. They’re playing at the Finlandiatalo.
These photos were tagged to the Simple Minds FB page back in 2015 and posted while the band were out touring for Big Music – just a few days after I saw them for the first time in fact. They were posted by Dee Rock Pic – assuming that is the photographer’s FB account?
Granted they aren’t as fantastic as Horst’s set of photos but they are still great in that they were a set previously unseen by me and I thought them worthy of a highlight and share. There is a certain atmosphere to them and I particularly like the first and last ones of Jim.
Dream Giver Redux states there was a recording of the Helsinki gig made for a Finnish radio station but I can’t find any recordings linked to it on YouTube. Art & Talk (appropriately enough) has a recording of King Is White And In The Crowd from an unknown source although he seemed to think initially that it was from Utrecht on 16 June but he wasn’t certain. Let’s then assume that it might hail from the Helsinki gig and enjoy it. Jim’s wearing the same red shirt/jacket in the promo photo on the video ident as he is in the photos above…so it all links up nicely.
Happy New Year – Kerrsday Thursday lovers! Let’s hope 2023 is a great year for us all.
That photo with the out of focus guitar and Jim in the centre of the frame is fantastic.
