Won this magazine on eBay. Came from a seller in Belgium. I have scanned the whole magazine and will share it soon. In the meantime, I just wanted to share the images that I scanned of the magazine. I tried to clean them up and stop them from looking like little black and white Lichtenstein’s. I’m not sure how successful I’ve been. Some I’ve never seen before, hence I was so keen to get this magazine.
Etienne Tordoir was obviously on the set when they were recording Someone Somewhere In Summertime and Glittering Prize for that Belgian TV music show. Nice to see a still photo from that.
And I’d never seen half of those Corbijn photos from the OUAT recordings in New York. I know several of them where in the tour program, but some of these I had never, ever seen. Not sure who’s with Jim in the studio photo, whether it’s Bob or Jimmy or neither of them as it really doesn’t look like either of them – but I don’t know who else it would be.
I’d try and ask Jim but… there is just no point. He’s not around. And I am really not wanting to go anywhere NEAR the fan pages at the moment. And, well, he probably wouldn’t remember or be able to tell who it is anyway.
Maybe if someone else knows? Answers on a postcard.
I love these photos! There were some photos shared on the SM group page by photographer Etienne Tordoir and he linked to his archive of photos on the facebook page that is linked to below on this post.
On that page were photos he took of SM performing at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels on March 29th, 1984. The photos of Jim – especially his interactivity with the crowd – are just beautiful! Look at all those hands reaching out for him.
ERMEAGEERRRRRRD! IMMA GONNA CRY! I am ssssoooo happy this is up there. But I am sssooooo scared it’ll get taken away. PLEASE stay up there until morning, so I can make sure I can copy it for my own personal collection.
Jim is just off his tits glorious in this performance. I mean…he really is flying high, but I just love how he is. He’s just….EVERYTHING!
That Folllies performance of Factory back in 1980? It was such a great inspiration for a spate of art. I think I just got mesmerised by the way Jim performed in that clip.
I’m always in awe of the young Jim. Just…that self-belief he possessed is…intoxicating. Silly, because I find myself both wanting to be him (not a singer, as such…but just to have the balls to pursue that artistic thing) AND be *with* him.
When I look at the images I am working on, or I look over at my walls, I just find myself saying over and over again “he’s beautiful. He’s just so beautiful. Beautiful. He’s beautiful.” – like a mantra.
I “wakened up” (as a certain Mr Kerr would say) at 3.30am having had a mixed and slightly fitful sleep. The reason? I had decided when it was announced Jim would be on the Zoe Ball Breakfast show on Radio 2 a couple of weeks back to bite the bullet and head on in to see him. Well…that was the hope.
My thinking being…if the news is big enough that he’s on with Zoe Ball, he’ll be there in the studio, NOT on the phone!
I got myself ready and had a taxi booked by 4.30am. My target was the 5.08am train to St Pancras.
I was actually running early and made the 4.50am train in! I got to St Pancras at 5.30am and made my target of being outside Wogan House (adjacent to Broadcasting House, where the Radio 2 studios are based) by 6.15am.
The celeb spotting started almost immediately with Paul Gambaccini leaving the building just a few minutes after I arrived.
Also shortly after I arrived, a man appeared and stood near me.
Firstly, there was no Zoe Ball. Nicki Chapman was presenting for her this morning. That was the first slight worry.
I was listening in while standing outside freezing my tits off. Ian Waite appeared and walked through the doors. Then some 45 minutes later he left again.
And just before 8am, Ken Bruce appeared and walked in.
After the Strictly news with Ian Waite, Nicki said “and Jim Kerr will be coming in later…” and I thought “OMG! YES! I have made the right choice coming down here!
Subsequent mentions after that she had changed it to “and I’ll be chatting to Jim Kerr…” Oh, shit! Why have you changed the wording, Nicki?
Once the 8am news happened I was thinking “he’ll be here soon. He’ll be here soon. Any minute now.” Then there was a thing on Thunderbirds. “Okay, any minute he should turn up. He’ll be on soon. Come on, Jim! Where are you?”
Then the traffic report happens. And then it all became too clear as Nicki said “I’ll be talking to Jim Kerr next.” Well…he hadn’t appeared. There are no other doors for him to enter through. FUCK! He’s phoning in from Glasgow!
As much as I was thinking before today “it’s the risk I take. If he’s there, he’s there. If not then…I won’t get disheartened.” Pfffft! That’s what I DELUDED myself into believing anyway.
So, he was a no show. The man who came and stood near me had been with me the whole time. As soon as it was apparent Jim was not coming, so walked off. So he was obviously waiting for Jim too. At least I wasn’t the only saddo hoping against hope. Lol.
I walked off too…but was still listening to the show and Jim talking to Nicki. I heard the song too, which, did not register with me until today is a King Creosote cover! Of course!
So…the first gig I have lined up for 2020 has more significance than I first anticipated. But NOW…I may see a Simple Minds gig BEFORE King Creosote. For we had TOUR NEWS! Jim actually did announce a European/UK tour for Feb/Mar/April 2020. See below! Obviously all further details are available through Simple Minds’ various social media.
And so, despite trying not to be disappointed about not seeing Jim…I was a little. You know. It was an effort. Up at 3.30am. Out the door at 4.30am. At Wogan House by 6.15am. Stood there until 8.40am, freezing to death as I had not put enough layers on, needing the loo, but also thirsty and gasping for coffee.
I consoled myself by going to a Starbucks and having a spiced pumpkin latte and a lemon muffin.
I then walked for miles and ended up at Shaftsbury Ave and into China Town. I just walked about wasting time.
More compensation, this time in the form of a chai latte and (see pic) a lovely slice of passionfruit cake.
I had a gift with me for Jim. It’ll have to wait for a future time.
Finally…for your lugholes…here’s For One Night Only (unless you are a MEGA Simple Minds fan! One night is NEVER enough! Lol. And I mean all the innuendo that is laced with. Yes! Lol)
Upon recommendation by sound engineer extraordinaire, Olivier Gerard (aka GG) – I present to you, Whispering Sons. Currently on tour in the UK. I just missed out seeing them in Bristol. The play Glasgow tonight.
And as Sod’s law would have it, they play The Lexington on Saturday, but I’m seeing Stewart Copeland that night. Had I not been commited to that gig already, I’d have definitely gone to see them.
More of my Belgian clippings shared. An advert for tomorrow’s Minds gig as well as a letter from a reader on their discovery of Roxy Music…running strange parallels with my own recent Roxy epiphany. I do love the cartoon type artwork of the early Roxy band dynamic. Google Translate didn’t do the best work translating the French, but we get the gist of the letter (see translation below).
Anyway…there will be more things on the way. I love sharing these clippings. All part of the service here at Prip’s blog 🙂
In the simple past – Having already heard of the band Roxy Music without listening, I hastened to read the article on the latter. [I assume that means the previous edition of the magazine] In devouring the text I was attracted by the phrase “The most important band of England after the Beatles.” Could it be that I missed such a phenomenon I immediately began to listen to the band’s first album and from the first notes I was dazzled, no doubt this album was one of the most important that rock has known, so I want to thank you for making me discover such a group.
Sounds like me with Ms Deboick (and to some extent, compounded by Sir Kerr, aka The Boy).
I, just a few days ago, bought a bunch of clippings on eBay. Some things within I already had copies of (the whole NME December 4th, 1982 edition with Jim on the cover, taken by Anton Corbijn, for example). There are actually a number of good things…gig reviews, album and single reviews…some Belgian magazine articles, etc…but I primarily bought them for THIS!
If you have visited this blog regularly, you’ll know how much I have coveted this picture, and wanted it in colour. The only other colour copy I had seen of this was barely 2 x 3 inches in size. This one is approximately 8 x 10 inches. Oh…that make up! Look at him! Beautiful beastie he is! I mean…yeah, he’s alright. Lol
Ahem. Decorum, decorum.
Anyway, I am “made up” to have myself a colour copy of it.
It’s only just a snap of it on my iPad for now. I will take a proper scan later and upload…and will share some of the other clippings too. (Not many other pics, really…mostly just text.)
UPDATE: Proper scan now here…
Sadly no idea on photographer because it isn’t mentioned on the clipping. Wish I knew.
