Kerrsday WhirliGIG – Stirling University, 15/11/1979

I started listening to this gig last night. First thing that hits you is that Capital City is not quite Capital City. From what I can tell, this is its debut outing and the song at this point is just referred to as “Pulse”.

There are different words to it, there’s no “city that we live on” – it’s an island.

Well you took its culture the tribal …” (can’t decipher the line properly)

I had a go at trying to work out the lyrics. I love hearing the germ of something new. I love being let into that. It feels like you’re being let in on a secret. Those were the days! We’re never privy to ANYTHING now until it’s fully formed. Jim keeps everything very close to his chest now and doesn’t really share anything beyond saying “I’m writing”.

I think this might just be my favourite version of Here Comes The Fool of the ones I’ve heard. Jim is so UP on this version. He sounds like he is well up for this gig! He even comes in too early for the final chorus of the song. Lol

It also included is a very early outing of Naked Eye, which seems a little different lyrically to what is on the Real To Real Cacophony album. Just subtle changes and differences – Jim sings “It’s so dark, I don’t understand it”, for example. And there’s no reference to cherries or spiders at the end of the song. It actually sounds like a Sparks song the way it sounds when Charlie’s guitar comes in at the beginning.

I was alert enough until Life In A Day, then sleep started to take over, but I was alert enough until that point to take it the different to the norm performance that Jim seemed to be giving off. Firstly, he seemed slightly more talkative and interactive with the crowd than usual – esp. of that period. Secondly, his vocal performance seemed different than usual of the period. Perhaps he was flying high? He sounded like he was enjoying the gig anyway. Just from the sound of things, he was sounding more confident, and not the reserved, stilted performer he tended to exude in the very early days – “he seemed like he should have been in special school” as Mick said recently. Lol

I am really excited to hear the rest of it. You can’t help but get swept up in it. I mean, yes, it’s early days, but they are already two albums in and just…LISTEN TO THEM! No wonder every person who went and saw them then raved about them and that their following just kept growing exponentially. They’re barely two years into being a band and they have two albums under their belt, an already – small but – dedicated fanbase that just grows and grows and their so AWESOME.

What’s Left?

I’m not really sure what *is* left? This site has become stagnant. Gigs are on hold. There is NOTHING coming from the official channels from Simple Minds – now suddenly after 9 years on Facebook is now being referred to as just “Simple Minds” rather than “Simple Minds Official”.

Another nail in the coffin? Another sign of “letting go”?

This blog will just end up a sad nostalgia fest. “Look at all the gigs I USED to go to.” I could add more quotes but I’m sure you can make assumptions of where it would lead.

All past tense. Past. Past. Past.

The future finally seemed here. And in the blink of an eye, it’s gone again.

I’m not in the mood for April Fools jokes and pranks. I’m a year-long fool. An every day fool.

Perhaps I’ll just go back to swamping this site with the nostalgia of a time I wish more than anything I was involved in. Early SM. For all the reasons I will keep in my head and heart.

Maybe still do some art…who knows? If I do, I may give some of it away. I still owe two people prints. I’ll get them to them soon and see where we go from there. Other than those few things, I’m not sure I have it in me for the “onwards” Simple Minds journey.

I’m taking a U-turn. I think the driver of the bus doesn’t want me on the forwards journey anyway.

And besides…what’s one fan in the grand scheme of things?

The journey was fun while it lasted. But these past few months haven’t been much fun. Time to get off the bus, I guess.

I wish I could explain what a void I am feeling right now. It goes beyond there being a break in the tour. I have felt this void for over 12 months now. It just…doesn’t get any better. It just gets worse. The past few months have been the worst of all, combined with the upheaval of a house move and the loss of my mum….everything just feels so hollow.

Where Did The Fool Go?

It’s a strange thing, research. You can be looking for one thing and will unearth something else entirely!

Take a song like Here Comes The Fool, for example. It makes its first known live appearance shortly after the release of Life In A Day and is played at gigs in the summer.

By October they are back on the road and Here Comes the Fool is a regular on the set. The musicality of it is well developed and strong. Jim has played with the lyrics…they now seem fairly well scripted and fairly different to how they appeared early in the summer.

It remains a staple in the set until the spring of 1980 when we start to see compositions that come into the set that are then on the Empires And Dance album.

So, a curious being is Here Comes The Fool. It starts tentatively…quickly makes itself a band and crowd favourite – yet never makes it to get a studio recording for Real To Real Cacophony – or even to appear on a B side. I am a strange one in that I defend Veldt when many other SM fans don’t have much time for it. But given that…it seems to me that THAT could have been the place for Here Comes The Fool on R2RC – to have replaced Veldt with it (as much as that pains me to say that).

What do you guys think? Do you think that should have been the case?

I added the different versions of the song because it seemed a good thing to be able to hear its progression and subtle change – esp. with the lyrics. Jim was a devil for it then – but he was free to keep morphing it as it was never captured in the studio, hence he felt free to keep medling (I’m assuming?). Ultimately, it didn’t deviate a lot, and it seems a shame now to be consigned to history. Still, it sounds as if Jim grew tired of “taking his hand” (The Fool’s hand, I mean – Lyric alteration over time from “Well here comes the fool – you can take his hand” to “Here comes the fool – don’t wanna take his hand”).
