New Jim (The Other Jim) – Every Loser

He’s 75 years old and you’d never know it to listen to this new album.

This week has seen a new album release from one James Newell Osterberg Jr (aka Iggy Pop). I had a listen to it on Friday night – admitting that I hardly pay any attention to new material from the Iggster these days, but something had me wanting to give this one a go. I’m glad I did! I really enjoyed it. It’s got a good mix of styles on it, from the out-and-out punk of Frenzy (Billy Sloan played it on his radio sow late night and talk about “edited” version. Lol. I can’t believe there is still such a hang up about swearing in music. Also, I just don’t get the censorship that still happens on radio. On TV it’s deemed “after the watershed” after 9pm and swearing is allowed. Billy’s show is on from 10pm and yet Frenzy had two lines from it completely silenced. So ridiculous!) Modern Day Ripoff, and Neo Punk to the more indie hard rock of Strung Out Johnny and All The Way Down to the more crooning Iggy on tracks like New Atlantis, Morning Show and The Regency. There’s some great ‘sprechgesang’ from Iggy on New Atlantis as well as The News For Andy and My Animus.

For me, New Atlantis and The Regency were the standouts. I also enjoyed Strung Out Johnny and Modern Day Ripoff, as well as the two ‘interlude’ tracks for Iggy’s deep crooning baritone – almost getting to bass voice these days!

It probably hasn’t been since 1990’s Brick By Brick have I been this taken with a new album from Detroit Jim. This is the 10th album he’s released since then. I gave American Ceasar (1993) and Naughty Little Doggie (1996) tries but they just didn’t win me round so I gave up trying out new material of his – until now.

I won’t write much more now as I’d like to do a Fanatical Friday post on Iggy at some point and I’d like to leave more of that “in-depth” discussion until then.

For now I’ll say give Every Loser a listen as it’s bloody good!

Prip out!
