That’s Entertainment – AND Inspiration!

Wow! What a story, Lesley O’Toole! Your first professionl journalist’s interview being granted by Jim…and from there?! I’ll let Lesley tell the story herself in these two wonderful posts shared on Instagram.

Thank you for sharing the story, Lesley.

Jim Kerr and me: December 8, 1982 at London’s Lyceum. In 1984 when I was still a law student at Bristol University, and still wild about Simple Minds, I wrote my first ever professional magazine piece – an interview with Jim. All the Scottish bands and loads more used to stay at London’s (in)famous Columbia Hotel so I wrote to JK c/o the hotel, asked him if he’d do the interview, and included a stamped addressed envelope. He wrote back saying: “Yes, 2pm Sunday.” I already had my own fanzine but this was the start of my “proper” career as an entertainment journalist. I still wonder if I’d be a lawyer now were it not for this. I certainly wouldn’t be as blessed and happy as I am living in LA. So thank you Jim for saying yes, and thank you Simple Minds for 35+ years of pure joy. Breathless with excitement for more of it at LA’s beautiful Orpheum Theatre later. ❤️🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🎤🎸🥁 . . . . . @simplemindsmusic @gedgrimesmusic @cherissedrums #simpleminds #jimkerr #orpheumtheatre #thewaywewere #myfaveband #columbiahotel

#FBF Simple Minds have been my favourite band for too long to mention – since I was a kid anyway. Jim Kerr was also my first professional interview as a journalist and who knows if I’d even have become one were it not for that and him. Last month I found myself in the front row for their concert at LA’s gorgeous Orpheum Theatre. And then Jim spotted me and sang to me. Which song? Only my all-time Simple Minds fave – Someone Somewhere in Summertime. Gigantic coincidence or no? No in fact – but some sort of conspiracy perpetrated by my friend Ged Grimes, their brilliant bass player, who somehow remembered my fave song, saw me in the audience and conspired with JK. I have no photos or video (these were taken later that night) but it will be in my head forever. Ged and Jim – thank you! I adore you both and this meant the world. And Happy St. Andrew’s Day to all my Scottish friends. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️🎤 . . . . . . . @gedgrimesmusic @simplemindsmusic #gedgrimes #jimkerr #simpleminds #orpheumtheatrela #orpheumtheatre #someonesomewhereinsummertime #magicmoment #standrewsday #scotland #lovescotland

Kerr Down Under – In NewKERRstle

0203EAEA-CD81-4DA5-B4BF-BFB30F5C45FF

Oh, holy fucking shitflaps, he’s bringing up 2020 as the full itenirary tour year for Oz, again! I should have pulled out all the stops to go! I NEARLY did! I nearly booked a flight that would have had me out there by now. I was at the Etihad website, I was at the last page, cursor hovering over that “pay now” box…but, something told me not to. “No fall back” if the money doesn’t come in by January. It’s like permanently being on the crest of a wave…just waiting and waiting for the fucker to crash, but it just rolls and rolls and rolls, never crashing to the shore. WHERE’S MY SHORELINE SPUME, GODDAMNIT!?!

I wanted to “seize the moment” – not wait until the next tour. Because…life is full of uncertainty. Why wait for the next one, when I could have NOW!? Albeit it was just one gig, and not in Sydney? It was Australian shores, near enough to Sydney for me (still within my home state) and (most importantly) happening NOW…not in two years time.

The time has elapsed now. The opportunity (what small window of opportunity there was) gone.

Que sera sera…

Oh, yeah…here’s the article from local Newcastle paper, The Herald – click here to read

Penguin Auction Day

Later today (local BST – British Summer Time), an auction of all the penguins that had been on display as part of Maggie’s Penguin Parade go under the hammer. The one that Fiona Sutherland co-created and Simple Minds sponsored (and have signed for the auction) being one of them.

You can see the SM sponsored penguin to the left of the picture. All the penguins are on display at Slessor Gardens in Dundee, where the auction will take place early this evening. Local Dundee paper, The Courier, have an article on the auction.

Mexican Minds

A short half page spread in local Mexican newspaper Reforma on Thursday night’s gig at the Pepsi Center.

I don’t have the best Spanish (well, any Spanish at all, actually) but, quickly casting an eye over it…seriously? We’re still bringing up Jim’s marriages? What exactly it has to do with the price of fish and this particular gig flummoxes me…but, it adds to the word count, I guess (a word count that could have mentioned the musicianship of the other band members, perhaps? Just a thought.)

Anyway…speaking of things that are neither here nor there…I loooooove that flamingo shirt! 🙂

Simple Minds In Slessor Gardens Finale Success!

Local Dundee newspaper The Courier and Advertiser showcased the gig finale in their opening pages with a glowing review. As if it would be any other way?!

Oh, I wish I could have been there! I pray it is not too long a wait until my next lot of gigs! “Normality” beckons for the next few months. On a personal scale, things will get busy and potentially VERY different. And, I still have several non SM gigs left for this year. With two already booked for next year, and two yet to be booked.

Anyway! The local review!

UPDATE: And more from other local paper the Evening Telegraph.

A Photo Finish At Taunton!

Local newspaper the Somerset County Gazette have posted a fabulous slideshow of photos from Sunday night’s Grandslam at Taunton Race Course. Not just of the music acts either, but of the punters in the crowd. I know several fans who went on Sunday, and it’s great seeing them all having such a fab time.

Just click on the image of Jim (one in the set) to be taken to the site to view the slideshow.

Quit It, Rain!

It was from a lady leaving a comment on today’s SMO post about her great time at the Colchester gig and saying the local paper had 125 photos from the gig in it did I go and look to see if I was in any of them…and lo. Lol

There’s “Little Beige Riding Hood” with a face that says “rain, can you PLEASE fuck off?” Lol. So funny…
